And although the Kenyan government has ambitious plans to scale up the power output, there may be a far simpler and far cheaper solution to providing power to the millions who are off the grid. The answer, says solar energy start-up MKopa, is the sun. In 2011 they won the word’s five top marathons and just last month put in winning performances in the london marathon. More than 150 Kenyan men can beat the Olympic marathon qualifying time and what’s all the more remarkable is that the majority hail from Kenya’s Rift Valley and in particular, from the area surrounding the town if Iten. Such has been the success of Iten’s runners that athletes from all over the world, and increasingly across Kenya, come here in the hope that some of the magic will rub off on them. This huge Indian Ocean island propelled into the mainstream by the animation film of the same name is famed for its biodiversity and all the sounds emanating from it, but their fate hangs in the balance. 90% of the island’s rainforest has been destroyed by man because of land pressures and now, just as conservation efforts were bearing fruit, the recent polticial turmoil on the island has seen a resurgence in logging and poaching. But these days it’s walls are adorned with hand painted slogans calling for peace, things like “restore peace fellow Kenyans” and “tribal war can’t solve the problem”. They are the work of an artist who calls himself Solo 7, otherwise known as Soloman Muyundo who has a foot in both political camps. He describes himself as a supporter of opposition leader Raila Odinga even though he is half Kikuyu, the tribe of President Mwai Kibaki. As head of a cooperative union for coffee farmers Tadesse Meskela has become well known both inside and outside Ethiopia as a committed campaigner for fair trade; for better prices for the farmers.
